What Is Glucomannan?




Glucomannan is a sugar made from the root of the konjac plant.  It is a water-soluble dietary fiber supplement that is used to aid the bowels in digestion by absorbing water, and is very useful as a bulking fiber for the digestive tract.  It absorbs water and makes up for the fact that we may not have enough water in our diets.  Glucomannan is also the main ingredient in shirataki noodles and konnyaku which are traditional Japanese foods. These products are made from the ground corm of the konjac plant. These natural products have been eaten in Japan for centuries. How to Use It


The amount of glucomannan shown to be effective for lowering blood cholesterol has been 4–13 grams per day. For controlling blood sugar, 500–700 mg of glucomannan in the diet has been used successfully in controlled research. For weight loss, 1 to 3 grams before each meal has been effective. When using glucomannan and other dietary fiber supplements, it is best to start out with a small amount and increase gradually. It is recommended to drink at least 8 ounces of water each time any bulk-forming laxative, including glucomannan, is taken.

Why does Glucomannan Work

First of all.  Fiber is bulk, and this bulk fills up our stomachs and intestines making us feel full.  Glucomannan might work in the stomach and intestines by absorbing water to form a bulky fiber which treats constipation. Diabetes and Blood Sugar Spikes

It has been proven that glucomannan can help control blood sugar spikes in type 2 diabetics.  This is because glucomannan is a soluble fiber,  when soluble fiber mixes with water,  it forms a gel.  This gel absorbs sugars and starches,  this greatly slows the absorption of these sugars into the blood stream.  This in turn keeps blood sugar,  as well as insulin levels steady.

This is important not just for the ever growing number of type 2 diabetics,  but for anybody interested in weight loss.  Because of how insulin works in the body,  blood sugar spikes are inevitably followed by blood sugar level crashes.  Both are nightmares for weight management.

When our blood sugar levels spike,  our bodies are flooded with insulin.  This is done to provide the body with energy,  but also to reduce blood sugar levels to normal before damage occurs to healthy cells.  This is why many diabetics suffer kidney failure,  amputations,  and blindness.

This blood sugar has to go somewhere,  and unless you’re actively burning off these sugars,  the only place they can go is to fat cells.  But after this,  there is an equal and opposite reaction that is just as harmful.
